Like Adele in my Song Lyric Sunday post on Nesie’s Place, 80’s pop queen, Jody Watley, is also searching, but not for a clone… for a new love!
Looking For a New Love is totally trippy, bouncy 80’s. Watley, a former featured dancer on Soul Train, and a member of the group, Shalamar, took the single all the way to number two on the BillBoard Hot 100 and number 1 on the R & B chart. The song is ranked as number sixteen for 1987 and was nominated in 1988 for the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female. It didn’t win, but it did help Watley take home the Grammy for Best new Artist.
Fun Fact:  In the song Looking For a New Love, Jody kicks her old lover to the curb, saying, Hasta la vista, baby! The phrase became an instant hit on answering machines, but would become a part of pop culture when actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke the words in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Fun Fact: Jody Watley is the goddaughter of music legend, Jackie Wilson.

I sleep so little, I have trouble relating to the concept anymore. But, when I do sleep, I dream. I used two of my fav dream songs last week for the picture/photograph challenge, so let’s move right to number three, Dreamlover by Mariah Carey.
Released on July 27, 1993, as the lead single from her third studio album, Music Box (1993), Dreamlover was written by Carey and Dave Hall. It experienced strong worldwide success, becoming Carey’s seventh chart topper on the US Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for eight weeks. It peaked at number one in Canada, and became a top-ten single in Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
The song pictures a protagonist calling for a perfect lover, her “dreamlover,” to whisk her away into the night and not disillusion her like others in the past.
The video was shot in upstate New York, during August 1993. It includes an appearance by Carey’s dog Jack, and shows Carey dancing in a flowerbed and field, swimming in a large pond, boarding a hot air balloon, and dancing alongside several shirtless male dancers.

Walking on Broken Glass was written and performed by Scottish singer Annie Lennox, taken from her 1992 album, Diva. The song reached #1 in Canada, #8 in the United Kingdom and Ireland and #14 in the United States singles charts.

Annie Lennox fans will naturally wonder if Walking on Broken Glass refers to her long, torturous love affair with her ex-Eurythmics partner David Stewart.

The song’s theme of scorned love inspired a classic music video. Director Sophie Muller pulled from period films depicting the late 18th century—including Dangerous Liaisons and Amadeus. Lennox plays an aristocratic lady trying to regain attention from a former lover played by John Malkovich—the star of Dangerous Liaisons. Lennox’s other love interest is played by Hugh Laurie—the future House star played Prince George on the TV comedy Blackadder.

Lennox recalled:

This was a wonderful video to create. There were some wonderful people involved—John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie (before he had an American accent)! That was tremendous fun. The idea of it being a period piece, like Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Lennox saw a parallel between the film—where a noble woman plots to take revenge against an unfaithful lover—and this song:

The alternative title for ‘Broken Glass’ could easily have been ‘Hell hath no more fury than a woman scorned.’ The video is very wry and tongue-in-cheek. People can take me a little seriously sometimes, but I do actually have a rather radical sense of humor.

No one could push the envelope quite like Prince Nelson Rogers, known to the world as Prince. It took more than a few plays to understand his 1983 Little Red Corvette was about a one-night stand with a beautiful but promiscuous woman (the Little Red Corvette of the title); although he enjoys the experience, he urges her to “slow down” and “find a love that’s gonna last” before she destroys herself. In addition to the title, he uses several other automobile metaphors, for example comparing their lovemaking to a ride in a limousine.

Prince got the idea for the song when he dozed off in band member Lisa Coleman’s pink Mercury Montclair Marauder after an exhausting all-night recording session. The lyrics came to him in bits and pieces during this and other catnaps. Eventually, he was able to finish it without sleeping.

The song was from Prince’s breakthrough album, 1999, and rose to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 13 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Rolling Stone ranked Little Red Corvette #108 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and the guitar solo, played by Revolution band member Dez Dickerson, was ranked #64 by the readers of Guitar World as one of the 100 best guitar solos of all time.

Following Prince’s death in April 2016, Little Red Corvette re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 29. It rose to number 20 one week later. It has sold 1.08 million digital copies in the United States alone.

I must be in a wedding-song mood this week as I stretch the theme out again to include this romantic ballad.

In 1997’s For You, artist Kenny Lattimore pledges his love and devotion… and a plan for life together to the woman he loves.

Written by Kenny Lerum, a high school classmate of Lattimore, the song reached number six on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks (Billboard) and number thirty-three on the US Billboard Hot 100.  For You received a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards but lost to R. Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly.

It’s simply a beautiful song.

It’s my first time repeating a song in the challenge. I posted this one back at the end of  January  as a “goodbye” song, but even as I considered other songs for fear, this Grammy-winning hit wouldn’t go away.
Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)  by Gladys Knight & the Pips released on December 26, 1972 on Motown’s Soul Records and  became one of their biggest hit singles to date and was also the last single the group released prior to them leaving Motown for Buddah Records in February 1973.
On March 17, 1973, the song reached number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart, staying there for four consecutive weeks. Due to the song’s strong crossover appeal, it eventually peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, with Vicki Lawrence’s The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia (another Song Lyric Sunday feature) blocking it from number one. However, it went number one on the U.S. Record World and Cashbox charts. It also crossed over to the adult contemporary chart, peaking at number 15. Worldwide, it was also successful, peaking at number 9 in France, number 11 in Canada and number 31 in the UK.

Still going my own way with this week’s theme to post this Janis Joplin classic which has been a part of pop culture for almost five decades.
Mercedes Benz was written by Joplin and the poets Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth at Vahsen’s, a Port Chester, New York bar, on August 8, 1970 during an impromptu poetry jam.  The lyrics were inspired by the first line of a song written by McClure, “Come on, God, and buy me a Mercedes Benz.”  Janis would sing the song for the first time at a concert later that same night.
The song is about the search for happiness by the pursuit of worldly goods. It’s a classic hippie rejection of the consumerism that was already a big part of American society.
Recorded in one take two months later, Mercedes Benz  would also be Joplin’s last recorded song.  She died three days later on October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose. Janis was just twenty-seven-years old.
The song has been covered dozens of times by artists and groups around the world including Elton John, Taj Mahal, and Pink, and used in countless movies and advertising campaigns. Many may be unfamiliar with Joplin and her music but most have heard this song at least once since its release.

Still stretching the theme to something to drink, there’s no way I could pass up the iconic dance scene from the 1985 big screen hit, Pee wee’s Big Adventure.
In the movie, Pee-wee enters a biker bar for one large wine and to make a phone call, but the outlaw motorcycle club threatens to kill him after he accidentally knocks over their motorcycles. Pee-wee makes a last request, dancing to the song Tequila. His dance wins over the bikers, who give him a motorcycle for his journey. (Pee-wee crashes his motorcycle immediately afterwards.)
The version of Tequila used in the movie is the original recorded by 50s group The Champs, and written by band member Danny Flores (as Chuck Rio). It was a number one song in 1958 and won the 1959 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
“Tequila” is the song’s only lyric.

Originally a 1991 number one song for Canadian Tom Cochrane, Life is a Highway became a top ten hit fifteen years later for American country group Rascal Flatts when they covered the song for Pixar’s animated hit Cars. The song also appears on their 2006 album, Me and My Gang.
This song is a biggie with my family because of Jordan, my three-year-old grand-nephew.
Before he could walk or talk, J was mesmerized by Cars. It got so bad, the only way to calm a fussy, cranky J was to put the DVD on. (Which of course, I bought for him. 😀 ) And he wouldn’t just watch the movie, he had to hear the song.
J also never watched the movie alone.  If you were present, you were a part of the Jordan on Lighteningviewing audience. So it’s little wonder, the Arizona part of the family knows all the words to the song… and most of the dialogue in the movie. 🙂
Here he is on his riding Lightening McQueen, and yes, he’s wearing Lightening McQueen sandals too. I have no idea where my sis gets them but he gets a new pair every summer.
After being bought every vehicle in the movie, some twice, J became hooked on YouTube toy videos (I didn’t know there was such a thing) featuring the cars… from Cars. He dragged us all to the TV… several times, to see the race track based on the movie. J got a big surprise when he received his own Ultimate Florida Speedway for Christmas in 2017.
